Who Stole My Coffee??

I didn't think I was really addicted to coffee. Sure, my intake went from once a week to once a day, increased from one cup at a time to two, but really - that's not so much, right? I don't stop at Starbucks to buy $4 coffees (no matter how deliciously delightful), I don't *need* coffee to get up each morning... Yeah. That was until somebody stole my coffee.

I recently took a trip with my husband to Hocking Hills, and of course, I brought along a can of my favorite instant latte. That's right. I love instant coffee. :P Things were fine and dandy until we got back from vacation, and there was no coffee to be found. I couldn't believe I could possibly leave behind my precious tin of coffee. That would be akin to leaving one of my dogs behind. I searched everywhere - I rummaged through bags, the dirty clothes, places I had searched five minutes prior. It didn't matter. It was gone. I was coffee-less and miserable.

"Okay," I thought. "It'll be okay. I don't need coffee anyway. A few days without it until I can get to the grocery won't kill me."

Uh huh.

Day one wasn't so bad. I had a teensy bit left in the house, and I enjoyed it mightily with my breakfast muffin.

Day two, about mid-morning I developed a headache. As the day progressed, my eyes became squinty. Various objects started to resemble my missing container of coffee. I began to blame my corgi for stealing and hiding it. He, in turn, began chuckling behind my back, and looking entirely innocent and non-talking-dog-like whenever I turned back around. It had to stop.

I finally managed to drag myself in a zombie-ish coma to my car to take another of my dogs to class, and as I smashed the car into the wall of Tim Horton's, I stumbled from it moaning, "Coffee, coffee... corgi stole my coffee...." Luckily, the employees of Tim Horton's are professionals that recognize the symptoms of coffee withdrawal, and provided a cafe mocha stat! Relief, sweet relief. I was able to dislodge my car from their building and continue, refreshed, to dog class.

The next day, I had to suffer through another morning without coffee - but as I had an appointment in town, I knew I could stop at the store and replenish my supply. At the store, I grabbed every flavor I could reach, threw them into my cart, snickering madly at my good fortune, and checked out with the speed of a NASCAR driver. The drive home was equally as quick, though fortunately minus the wrecks and destruction. I cackled to myself as I set each tin tenderly in my cupboard, glancing and smirking at the corgi, whose short little nubs couldn't possibly reach my new supply of sweet, delicious coffee. He merely sat there, head tilted, pondering. No doubt mocking me in his little corgi mind.

As I reached for sweat pants to put on for the rest of this now glorious Friday, I spied something shiny in one of my bags on the floor in my bedroom. It was the missing tin of coffee. I sat down and laughed until I cried. And the corgi came over, grinning mischievously, and sat in my lap, demanding that I rub his ears.

Little kids like to feel special. I remember when I was a wee one, my brother and I had matching "I'm the Little Sister"/"I'm the Big Brother" t-shirts, and we wore them all the time. You know, back before my brother would drag me down the stairs by my ankles or stuff me into the laundry hamper and sit on top of it. We have a lot of pictures of vacations where we proudly wore our matching tees.

It's something you've got to take advantage of, I think. I mean, once your kids get older, it's going to be a lot of "She's looking at me!" and "Stop touching me!" Fun Calendar Facts and Gifts

Mankind has used the Sun, Moon, Stars and Planets to measure the passage of time through the ages. Ancient civilizations used the motion of all of these through the sky to determine the seasons, months and years. These were the precursors of our present day Calendars.

Our calendars are based on three key astronomical events... Day, Year and Month.

The Christian calendar (Gregorian calendar) is based on the motion of the earth around the sun.

The Islamic calendar is based on the motion of the moon.

the Jewish calendar combines both, in that its years are linked to the motion of the earth around the sun.

Before today’s Gregorian calendar was adopted, the older Julian calendar was used. It was very close to the actual length of the year, but as it turns out, but the Julian calendar did a slow shift off track over the following centuries.

It wasn’t until 1582, by which time Caesar’s calendar had drifted a full 10 days from it's original course, that Pope Gregory XIII (1502 - 1585) finally reformed the Julian calendar. But the "new" calendar, as we know it today, was not adopted uniformly across Europe until well into the 18th century.

The legal code of the United States does not specify an official national calendar. The use of the Gregorian calendar in the United States stems from an Act of Parliament of the United Kingdom in 1751, which specified use of the Gregorian calendar in England and its colonies.

Domesticated Parrots? And other Myths

It annoys me no end, as a bird fancier, parront, and zoologist, when I come across the term "domesticated parrot." It's an oxymoron. There's no such thing as a domesticated parrot. Domestication requires many, many generations of breeding selectively, and most parrots today are still only a few generations removed from the wild. The closest parrot to domestication is probably the budgerigar, or budgie, or "parakeet," as we Americans ignorantly call them.

And that's another source of irritation - the parakeet. That's like going to the aquarium, and squealing, "Oh, a fish!" Parakeets are not one single species of parrot. They're actually an entire group of parrots, with long, tapering tails. Macaws are parakeets. Cockatiels are parakeets. And Budgerigars, which are the species we love to call parakeets, are also parakeets. It is slightly more correct, if you don't want to call them budgies, to at least refer to them as "American Parakeets." Even though they are an Australian species, at least that lets others know you're referring to what Americans call parakeets.

Did you know parrots do NOT have vocal chords? They are actually mimicking sounds through their trachea. And intentionally teaching a bird swear words is about as funny as tapping on aquarium glass and chanting, "here fishy, fishy, fishy."

Bird seed is actually a really crappy diet for parrots. Most parrots naturally eat vegetables, fruits, and leaves, in much larger quantities than seeds. The seeds found in bird mixes are usually not even what the bird would find in the wild. Seeds are extremely high in fat, which is great for a wild bird that is extremely active and spends a lot of time flying. Not so great for your bird in its cage, that doesn't spend much time hunting for food or flying around. Fatty liver continues to be a great health concern in captive parrots.

Who doesn't love The Flintstones or know all the words to the theme song?! The great American animated television cartoon produced by Hanna Barbera aired on ABC Television for six years from September 30, 1960 to April 1, 1966. September 30, 2010 marked the 50 year anniversary for this television classic. Happy 50th!

The main cast of characters includes The Flinstone family consisting of Fred, Wilma, Pebbles, Dino, Baby Puss and Doozy plus their loveable neighbors and best friends, The Rubbles—Barney, Betty, Bamm_Bamm and Hoppy. Set in the Stone Age in the town of Bedrock, this imaginary version of the past shows dinosaurs, woolly mammoths, saber-toothed tigers and other extinct animals living alongside cavemen while chronicling the everyday life of these families. The great thing about show was that these cavemen had 20th century technology but all items were made from pre-industrial materials and powered by the use of a variety of different animals/dinosaurs. For instance cars were made out of stone and powered by the feet of the passengers, a baby elephant would be used as a vacuum cleaner, birds as car horns, a woodpecker using it's beak to play a gramophone record or an "electric" razor made from a clam shell and vibrating from a honey-bee that was inside.

It was a great show full of fun and humor. There were even some great guest appearances by Ann-Marget as Ann-Margrock, Tony Curtis as Stony Curtis and even Mick Jagger and The Rolling Stones as Mick Jadestone and The Rolling Boulders. I always loved all the musical numbers! Below is a clip of Ann-Margret singing as Ann-Magrock on The Flintstones. Enjoy!

Cattle Dog Chaos!!

Dax and Popper

I LOVE cattle dogs. I have one full blooded red heeler, and then one red heeler/beagle mix. My parents have an Aussie/Cattle Dog mix (aka Texas Heeler), as well as what we believe is an Akita/Cattle Dog mix. However, my start in this breed was pretty rocky, and I have to admit, that it actually started in a loathing.

Back in the day, when I worked at a pet store, we were allowed to bring our dogs to work. One of my co-workers had a blue heeler puppy. The thing was obnoxious. She had the most high-pitched bark (if you've never heard an Australian Cattle Dog bark in its most annoying, pay-attention-to-me-or-I'll-continue-this bark, count yourself lucky), she was borderline aggressive, she was hyper and jumpy, the list goes on and on. That was my first experience with the breed. Not a positive one. She also tried to eat my Old English Sheepdog, who was terrified of her.

Not too terribly long after, my dad adopted his Aussie/Heeler mix, an insane dog he calls Libby. She's actually a VERY good dog, and tends to display all the heeler traits rather than the Australian Shepherd ones. She is wary of strangers, fiercely loyal to and protective of my dad. And yet, she still has that extremely annoying high-pitched bark when she feels she's being ignored or urgently needs to get a message across. I don't mind Libby, but she isn't a dog I would want for myself.

It wasn't very long after that, while at a Bird Fair looking for rare mutation cockatiels for my breeding program, that I came across a crate full of Blue Heeler/Beagles. Now, I was sort of looking for a small dog at the time, though not very actively. The idea of a beagle/blue heeler honestly made me ill. I was not extremely fond of either breed - beagles having a certain odor, being hard to train, and being prone to incessant barking. The concept of combining the two seemed like an awful idea. They were an accidental litter, however. Unfortunately, I chose to hold one, a little, red, six week-old puppy who just laid on my chest and gave me kisses as sweet as can be. I never put him down. He came home with me. And that's how I got Popper.

The next Cattle Dog cross that came into our lives was my parents' dog Bently. I was at the time on a list for "euthanasia alerts," so when a dog in my area was going to be put to sleep at the pound, because nobody wanted him, I'd get an e-mail. This dog looked like the black and white version of Libby. It said he was ten years old (a fact we later found out to be incorrect), and having a fondness for dog that looked like Libby, as well as old dogs, I went to save the guy. He was covered in urine and fecal matter, sopping wet, and looking miserable. As soon as we left the building, he turned around, heisted his leg, and peed all over the door. I knew this dog was going to be awesome. After I got him cleaned up, and after I had tried a few overnight visits with potential adopters, I took him to my parents' house, hoping to entice them to adopt him. I was not disappointed. The big guy saw my mom, and immediately ran up to her, tail wagging. He had not shown any interest in anyone before - this was meant to be. My mom told me to just "leave him with her" for the night, and it was there he stayed. He is now petted, cossetted, and otherwise completely spoiled. And that suits him just fine.

Dax was the first purebred red heeler to enter my home. Having finally been persuaded by Popper, Libby, and Bently, that maybe red heelers were okay, I began to chat with Australian Cattle Dog owners, look around a breeders, and seriously consider getting myself a puppy for my birthday next year. It was not to be. I was perusing Craigslist when I came upon a small red heeler that wasn't being treated well in his home. I steeled myself to foster the little guy, that was it. I'd already made arrangements for a puppy from a litter next year. I took Popper with me, to make sure the new dog wasn't dog aggressive, as this breed is extremely prone to be. To my surprise, the 10 month old puppy was extremely playful, LOVED Popper, but was excessively shy, even for a heeler. He was the complete yin to Popper's yang, being white with red instead of the typical cattle dog coloration. I loved him. I brought him home, where he continues to terrorize us all. He's recently started dog agility classes, and is learning to become a disc dog.

This breed is definitely not for everyone. ACD puppies are something like pets from another planet - I've never had a dog quite like Dax, ever. I kind of doubt most people have. Red heelers need a TON of exercise, and even more than that, a job to do. If I take Dax on a four mile hike, he'll come home and do laps around the yard. It doesn't even remotely phase him. If Popper doesn't get a sufficient amount of exercise each day, he'll find things in my house to destroy, no matter where they are. These dogs are stubborn, not great at dog parks (even if you overcome dog aggression, the herding instinct is so strong, and these dogs were bred to bite, that most likely it'll lead to trouble), and probably the most intelligent canines you could own. Like in Jurassic Park, when the velociraptors would figure things out. Australian Cattle Dogs are the velociraptors of the dog kingdom. I wouldn't recommend them around little kids, and they're really not the kind of dog you can just "have" and not do anything with. They need constant training, constant activity. They do make awesome agility dogs, disc dogs, obedience dogs, and pretty much any other dog sport you'd like to do.

There's hardly a person in our country today who isn't affected by breast cancer, either as a survivor, a friend or relative of a patient, a health care worker, or simply as a member of our society. Do your part to help find a cure! Here are five ways to help raise awareness:

Absinthe an Intoxicating History

I have been enjoying the intriguing history of this little fairy and she has inspired me to create my own version of her. She was the muse said to represent the potent liquor known as Absinthe. A naughty and mischievous lady, but very seductive. She is also referred to as La Fee Verte or Green Fairy. She was part of La Belle Époque, or "beautiful era". A period in France's history that began during the late 19th century and lasted until World War I. It was a golden time of beauty, innovation, and peace between France and its European neighbors. A time of cabaret, and cancan, and art flourished with Impressionism and Art Nouveau. She inspired famous artists and writers of that time, and was a favorite of the bohemian culture.

Some of the more famous imbibers she inspired were… Verlaine, Rimbaud, Poe, Wilde, Mary Shelly, Hemingway, Somerset Maugham and Jack London.

Absinthe often has a dazzling green color (depending on the brand). The color usually came from the chlorophyll content of the herbs used in the distillation process. The main ingredient being Wormwood.

But it not only inspired, it also drove some mad. It is said to be a contributing factor when Van Gogh cut off part of his ear.

Absinthe also enjoyed great popularity in New Orleans at that time but was banned in the U.S. around 1912. One place of great renown was “The Old Absinthe House” in the heart of the French Quarter, at the corner of Bourbon Street and Bienville. Many celebrities passed through their doors as well … including P.T. Barnum, Mark Twain, Jenny Lind, Enrico Caruso, General Robert E Lee, Franklin Roosevelt, Liza Minelli and Frank Sinatra.

Pet Adoption

Millions of dogs are euthanized every year in pounds, while they desperately wait for a new home that will never come. It's a serious problem, one that has caused a lot of debate, anger, and a feeling of helplessness. Out of my own six dogs, four were adopted. One as a stray, two from people who just couldn't take care of the dog any more, and one directly from Capital Area Humane Society.

The most common reasons for surrendering a pet include:

Moving
Not enough time
Allergies

Now, honestly, every single one of these can be prepared for, with a little foresight on the part of the pet owner or potential pet owner.

Moving. While there's not much you can do if you're moving out of the country (although, serious dog lovers CAN take their dog with them - the dog just has to be quarantined for a period of time usually), moving out of state is a flimsy excuse at best. You wouldn't leave your children behind, would you? There are also plenty of apartments, condos, houses, etc that allow pets, and many rescue groups can provide you with information on housing that accepts animals. Again, you wouldn't give up your children to move into an adults-only complex would you?

Not enough time. Okay, life happens sometimes. The unexpected can occur. That's why it's important to make sure you have as stable a life as possible before committing to pet ownership. Make sure your job hours are steady, that your position is relatively secure (as secure as one could hope in this economy, anyway), and you aren't expecting any children, heavy traveling, etc. A dog requires a certain amount of time, one on one, with a person every day to stay happy and not destroy your home to splinters. Make sure you have plenty of time for fetch, dog walks, and other fun activities for your dog every day for the foreseeable future. And most importantly, pick a breed or mix that fits into your lifestyle! Clearly, a dog such as a Border Collie is going to require a lot more exercise than a Shih Tzu.

Allergies. I think this one is just lame. If you're really interested in getting a dog, have your entire family meet the pooch before bringing it home. Many rescues and pounds will place holds on animals, so you can each snuggle the animal relentlessly and see if anybody has a reaction by the next day. Sometimes, however, allergies develop, in which case, see your doctor about prescription allergy relief like Allegra. I've found that bathing my dogs once a week (or every two weeks even) really cuts down on the dander and allergens. They also sell "dog allergy relief wipes" you can wipe on your dog before you begin hugging and petting. There are many commercial remedies to this particular issue, and you should try them all before surrendering your faithful canine.

Many people say that pound dogs are the best dogs, that they realize someone saved them, and will repay that person a hundredfold for the rest of their lives.

The issue of pet overpopulation and dog pound overcrowding is a huge one. Help raise awareness with these pet rescue t-shirts and gifts!

This post showcases a wonderful project created to help generate awareness and fund to be donated to Hope for Haiti. And in doing so, you can also pick up some fantastic stickers to give or to stick all over the place to help raise awareness!

This week we joined a group called Hearts For Haiti on Facebook. This is a group of artists, designers and illustrators on Zazzle trying to raise awareness and funds to help the Haiti earthquake victims. The group was founded by Jamie of Jamie Wogan Edwards Art on Zazzle. Jamie's vision was to get a group of shopkeepers on Zazzle to submit sticker designs to sell and then donating all the designer royalties to aid the Haiti earthquake victims. Jamie has worked tirelessly on her own sticker designs, a Facebook page, creating a shop on Zazzle, coordinating with numerous people to get their designs as well as finding a reputable charity to donate to and so much more. The Spotted Olive™ would like to give extra special thanks to Jamie for her amazing compassion and dedication to putting this project together. She is a true inspiration.

It has been wonderful to see the great sense of community spirit and people coming together to aid in the recovery of such devastation as is faced by the people of Haiti. Artists, designers and illustrators from around the world and of various backgrounds have generously donated their wonderful sticker designs to this cause.
